Romeo + Juliet (Vol 1): 20th Birthday Party

The wave of ’90s nostalgia has been huge in the past couple of years, which has been bloody awesome. The last decade of the 20th century was one where pop culture really shined and still does 20 years later. One movie that many would dub as “very ’90s” is Australian director Baz Luhrmann’s stylish take on William Shakespeare’s play Romeo & Juliet.

Trust me, this movie was huge back in the day! (Yes, I’m old enough to remember it, although I was only 9 when it was released). And the soundtrack is leaps and bounds of ’90s cool. In fact, there was so much music in the film that there were two volumes released! While the second volume mostly contained the movie’s orchestral score, Volume 1 is where all the ’90s goodies are.

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of Romeo + Juliet and its soundtrack as part of this year’s Melbourne Fringe, performer Tom Dickins and a selection of musicians will be playing songs from the soundtrack’s first volume at their huge art-rock party, for over two nights! Yes, two nights of awesome nostalgia for the tunes that brought the ’90s incarnation of the ultimate star crossed lovers together.

Expect to hear tunes from the likes of The Cardigans, Garbage, Everclear, Radiohead, Butthole Surfers, and of course, Quindon Tarver. Tickets are going from $25-$30, a great price for a musical retelling of the greatest romantic tragedy ever told with a MTV soundtrack.
