Melbourne is all about promoting local music talent, and what better location than the beach side St Kilda to do so. The St Kilda Festival is starting on the weekend, and Milk Bar Mag got to speak to local muso Zac Goldberg on his music, what inspires him and his gig at the festival.

What inspired you to become a musician?
Specifically, I think just listening to artists that I like. I want to emulate them and it was another means of being creative. I like to draw and other creative stuff. I thought I’d give it a go and I fell in love with it.

Who are your musical heroes? What is it about them that inspires you?
My first musical hero was John Mayer. I just love the way he could captivate an audience and express himself. I trace back into his root and got into Clapton and Hendrix and those guys. I branched out to Nick Cave, Jeff Buckley, and more modern guys like Ed Sheeran.

Do your songs have reoccurring themes?
Relationships are a pretty common reoccurance, they provoke a lot of emotion. As cliched as this may sound, I write about whatever’s on my mind. It’s fun to collaborate with the guitarist and the keyboard player in my band, playing with them is quite fun.

How did you get involved with the St Kilda Festival?
I live around the corner from Acland Street. I’d been playing gigs and I forgot to apply for the festival. I finally sent a few songs for this year and got the gig.

What can the audience expect from your show?
I’m playing with 3 other people, so hopefully the audience will enjoy what we’ve been working hard on and give an emotive performance. It’s a good opportunity to show what we’ve been doing.

Do you have plans to release an EP or LP soon?
Hopefully. We’ve done little recordings along the way. We’ve got some stuff together and compile it and hopefully it’s not too far away.
