Calling all fashionistas! In case you somehow missed the banners all around Melbourne, you should be aware that Jean Paul Gaultier has at exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria. And it’s amazing!

Fashion forward and iconic are just two ways to describe Gaultier, but there are many more. He is a pioneer of style and forward thinking, and this exhibition does an excellent job of representing that. All his fashion collections are presented in their own space with a twist, and every new room is like entering a new world. Each room has its own edge, and each is as exciting as the last.

When you first walk into the world of Gaultier, your eyes are riveted to the daringly colourful designs and futuristic displays. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time, you don’t want to miss a single detail, and without giving away any spoilers make sure you get a closer look at the mannequins! Very cool.

The ultimate non-conformist, this French fashion designer is all about breaking the rules and making up his own. Gaultier is all about the individual. His exhibit showcases a wide range of individual looks and styles, with his designs even catering to all different body shapes, in both men and women. This collection of designs represents a message of diversity and open-mindedness on Gaultier’s behalf.

There is so much inspiration to be gained from this exhibit, and not just the clothing, but the technical aspects that bring Gaultier’s creations to life. All fashion lovers should be lining up for this exhibit, but I think there is something for everyone, and even those not particularly into fashion will still find something to enjoy and appreciate. This exhibition is presented in such a way as I have never seen before, and is definitely one of the best.

As well as the multimedia presentations and artworks, there is a focus on Gaultier’s Australian muses, including Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett and Kylie Minogue. Here in Melbourne we are constantly surrounded creative and cultural inspiration, and it is good to know that such a fashion icon as Gaultier was likewise inspired by the beauty and style that Australia has to offer. The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier is the first exhibition to celebrate the designer, and we are extremely lucky to be the only Asia-Pacific venue where it is being held.

If you haven’t checked out this exhibition already, then go. Go right now, you definitely will not be disappointed. It is not to be missed.

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
