The Community Cup Overfloweth

Move over Chris Judd and James Podsiadly because this weekend the rockers are taking over. That’s right, grab your picnic basket, fill your Esky with longnecks and head down to Elsternwick Park for the 2011 Reclink Community Cup.
The Community Cup has been an annual tradition that has kept locals amused for 14 years when the Espy Rockdogs (a team of local musicians) clash with arch-rivals the Megahertz (radio personalities from Triple R and PBS). While the football-playing skills of both sides may leave much to be desired, the spectacle of tattooed, sweaty shirted and wild rock haired players grappling in the mud to snatch the pigskin can have more thrills and spills than a day at the G.
This year the Rockdogs — coached by Paul Kelly — are led by folk musician Dan Sultan who will be assisted by vice captains Tim Rogers and newcomer Jo Syme (Big Scary). The Megahertz too have made some changes, with radio personality Vince Peach (PBS, Soul Time) coaching for the first time.
Throughout the day iconic Melbourne bands You Am I, The Mercy Kills, The Rebelles and Tumbleweed will be performing, and all including a Nick Cave cover in their sets as a tribute to the music legend (not sure if Nick could drop punt as well as Tim Rogers, though).
Proceeds raised at the event will go to Reclink, a charitable organisation that encourages disadvantaged people affected by homelessness, poverty and substance abuse to participate in group sporting activities.
The 2011 Community Cup is on Sunday June 26 at Elsternwick Park, 164 Glenhuntly Rd, Elsternwick.
Gates open at 11am, football match begins at 2pm.
