Winter Art Show, Krautrock, Free Wine And More This Long Weekend

Not feeling adventurous? This week’s stay in pick is the BBC’s Planet Earth and ice cream. I recommend green tea or lemon gelato, but each to their own. If episode one, From Pole To Pole, doesn’t make you feel like a complete wimp being scared off by our comparably friendly winter, than you may as well set up shop and enjoy the entire boxed set. Hey, it’s the Queen’s Birthday weekend so you can spread you viewing out over three days like you’ve spread yourself over the coach. Otherwise, head outside!
Winter Show
Yah Yah’s Upstairs Gallery presents The Winter Show, a massive group exhibition from 16 female artists celebrating all that is grand about this chilly season. They’ll be all kinds of winter fun including snow princesses and of course some amazing art. Don’t be left out in the cold, head to the opening night and warm up with a glass or two of free wine.
Where: Yah Yah’s Upstairs Gallery, 99 Smith Street Fitzroy
When: Friday June 10 6:30pm – 9:30pm
Not All That Jazz
What is jazz anyway? When someone says jazz I think of old people, pretentious noise and Tony Wilson. The words ‘jazz’ and ‘festival’ together make my eyes roll back so far I can see the bile rising from inside my stomach. What doesn’t spring to mind is Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, screaming at waterfalls and Krautrock, the forerunner of post-punk, post-rock, electro, prog-rock and so on. Arguably the most significant of all Krautrock groups, German outfit Faust, play The Forum this Friday as part of the Melbourne Jazz Festival. It’s enough to make me rethink what jazz can be.
What: Krautrock concert
