Ninja Wizards At Underground Cinema

There’s a lot going on in film this week, with the St. Kilda Film Festival kicking off today. One of the more interesting film events, however, isn’t part of the festival. It’s secret, it could be happening anywhere, it’s the Underground Cinema.

It works like this: every three months the talented team from UGC take over a different venue and transform it, via set dressing, actors and a certain je ne suis quoi, into a world that reflects the movie they’re screening. Guests are encouraged to dress up, and details of the location and the movie itself are kept secret till the last minute.

Last December Red Bennies in South Yarra got the Prohibition make-over, with gangsters sporting tommy guns, flappers in feather boas and big bands playing before Little Caesar screened. In March the theme was ‘time traveler’, and the Newport Substation was transformed into a futuristic psychiatric ward complete with escaped mental patients, future cops and plenty of Bill and Teds.

This weekend’s theme is ‘magic’ and the dress code is Oriental/Magical/Harajuki. Ninja wizards, anyone? So dust off that flying carpet and astral travel over to UGC for a spellbinding experience.
