Did you miss the opportunity to have your very own roman holiday this year? Perhaps the glistening sights of Puglia and Cinque Terra are a distant memory. The St. ALi Italian Film Festival may alleviate some of that FOMO by showcasing the beauty, brilliance and the best of Italian cinema. On-screen at select Palace Cinemas in Melbourne from Thursday 15 September to Wednesday 12 October, Milk Bar previews the must-see films in the programme.

The St. ALi Italian Film Festival offers cinephiles the chance to indulge in a stunning collection of contemporary Italian cinema. The Australian premiere of Belli Ciao opens the festival, and features popular comedy duo Pio and Amedeo as two formerly inseparable friends who reunite in their hometown in Puglia, resulting in a comedic north vs south culture clash. When they work towards a common goal, the pair reignite their friendship and realise that home is not where you are but who you are with.

This year’s festival has strong Neapolitan energy, with many of the films located in Naples and/or starring actors from the region. The closing night screening of the Academy Award-winning trilogy of Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow stars the classic Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni. The two stars play lovers in the three vignettes, who reunite on screen after seven years. Witty, unforgettable and picture-perfect – this film is a sure thing!

Other highlights include The Hummingbird, directed by Francesca Archibugi and starring Pierfranceso Favino, which follows the main character from childhood to adulthood exploring the relationships that have crisscrossed his life over the years. There’s also Ennio – The Maestro, a documentary that celebrates the life and legacy of Italian composer Ennio Morricone and Salvatore: Shoemaker of Dreams, an exploratory film that charts the rise of Salvatore Ferragamo, the Italian shoemaker to the stars.

To celebrate, Milk Bar is giving away five FREE double passes to the St. ALi Italian Film Festival! All you need do is email ross@milkbarmag.com with the subject line ‘Italian Film Festival ticket giveaway’ and include your name, postal address and the film you intend to watch.
