On 11 July 1982, Italy unexpectedly defeated West Germany 3-1 to win the Soccer World Cup, fulfilling President Pertini’s hopes and dreams of reuniting his country and people under the Tricolour flag. Guiding Italy to victory was Paolo Rossi, better known as Pablito, and described by legends of the sport in Pele and Maradona, as ‘the greatest champion in the history of soccer.’

Rossi’s magical rise from abject poverty to World Cup Champion is re-lived and retold in the new documentary, Paolo Rossi: A Champion is a dreamer who never gives up. The doco features some of the greatest living players, and loving first-hand accounts are woven into the ‘Heart of the Champion,’ and accompanied by nail-biting vintage game footage of a sport that continues to captivate millions across the globe. Rossi’s exciting and touching life story, not only reflects the ups and downs of his lifestyle and playing career, but also highlights the terrifying terrorism and world events that had, for 20 years previously, been perilously on the front door of Italy.

This 90 minute feature documentary will toil with your emotions as it traces the parable life story of a soccer player that few in Australia will be familiar with. As soccer has evolved into a billion-dollar business – not just a sport! – this film powerfully reminds you to remember that dreams can come true when you follow one simple rule: never give up!

Now showing at Cinema Nova.
