Lock in your Labor Day weekend plans with the Melbourne Zoo’s Zoo Twilights series. What will you need? A picnic rug. Food – either a gourmet spread of foreign delicacies or a fully kitted out dinner. And lastly, gather your herd, pack or carload of mates and enjoy a winning night bopping along to some cool tunes.
Performing in front of sold-out crowds, this year’s line-up features a bevy of homegrown artists including The Cat Empire, Missy Higgins and Methyl Ethel. Perth-based band Methyl Ethel has enjoyed a steady climb to stardom ever since their first record Oh Inhuman Spectacle in 2015. Audiences were hooked by their alt-rock vibes, sick haircuts and swoon-y melodies. While ‘Twilight Driving’ will always be a personal favourite, their new track ‘Majestic AF’ oozes everything Methyl Ethel is loved for.
This year, Zoos Victoria are donating all proceeds from ticket sales to save Australia’s arguably cutest marsupial, the Mountain Pygmy-possum. Weighing at around 45 grams, the tiny marsupials currently face extinction due to climate change, introduced predators and a loss of habitat.
For those who want to have a geez and wander through the sprawling enclosures before the event start time of 5.30pm, you’ll need to purchase a general admission ticket. It is Zoo Twilights last weekend, so don’t miss out on some world-class acts like Stereolab on Friday, 6 and the iconic Mavis Staples on Saturday, 7 March.

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
