One Angry Festival

This Wednesday and Thursday night The Great Northern Hotel hosts the ninth annual running of the Angry Film Festival. Don’t let the name fool you however—it’s not all about anger. Produced by local filmmaker Tom Vogel, the Angry Festival takes its name from Vogel’s first short film, The Angry Penguin, and features a variety of local and international short films of all genres.

Spread over the two nights, this year’s line-up begins on the Wednesday night with international films from Spain, Germany, Italy and Syria, followed by the Aussie line-up on Thursday. As always, the content is highly eclectic, featuring subjects as diverse as an Australian documentary on the bizarre practice of body suspension to a Spanish comedy about gravediggers.

On this year’s crop of short film, Tom says “as always the judging has been very tough and even more so in regards to the Australian night where it seems filmmakers lift their game more and more. If some of these filmmakers get their chance to make a feature they’ll be giving the American blockbusters a run for their money.”

If you’re hankering for some fantastic filmic fun, head on down to the Great Northern. Doors open at 7:30pm with screenings commencing after dusk in the beer garden. For some extra added goodness, the first twenty punters through the door dressed as their favourite movie character will be presented with a one-year membership to starnow.com, an agency helping connect actors, models and musicians with work opportunities.

The Angry Film Festival runs Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 March
The Great Northern Hotel, 644 Rathdowne Street, Carlton North.
Tickets $10 at the door
