Holy Mothers (Die Präsidentinnen)

La Mama Theatre brings laughs and talent with the Australian premiere of Holy Mothers (Die Präsidentinnen). The production, written by Werner Schwab, is a creative take on old Catholic mothers. Set in a kitchen, the audience witness conversation between three women, focusing on themes of family, religion and their values.

Erna, Grete and Mariedl are retired cleaning ladies who spend their days gossiping and fantasising about what could have been. The dialogue is blunt and humorous with multiple monologues from each character to portray their take on the brutality of humankind. The play was originally written in German by Schwab in 1990 and translated by Mereditch Oakes for the stage in 1997.

Alice Bishop (Grete), Helen Doig (Erna) and Uschi Felix (Mariedl) are the stars of the play and have all had interesting and recognised careers in the industry. It was stimulating to see more established actresses on stage as it is quite often younger people or a cast with mixed experience.

La Mama Theatre is a cosy playhouse in a very classic Carlton building. The set is bright and those who grew up in a Catholic household will recognise the cake the actresses are eating and the classic grandma’s décor.

Grotesque yet funny, Holy Mothers was an interesting play showcasing what it is to be a retired woman looking back on life’s experiences.
