Happenstance

Ribboning 21km in and around the inner north, the Merri Creek trail is a much-loved and integral part of life for Melbourne’s community. Running from Thomastown to Abbotsford and spilling out into the Yarra River, the creek is a tranquil pocket of bushland and wetland. Used for peace and purpose, for movement and stillness, for getting to the thick of it or for getting away from it all, the trail is a well-trodden path for all walks of life.

Melbourne has always found a way to use the landscape in harmony with the celebration of arts and culture, and Happenstance will be no exception. Getting off to a successful start last year, Happenstance is a free community arts festival that aims to pay homage to the natural beauty of our beloved creek and encourage us to appreciate it in a new light. Fittingly, this event is proudly supported by the City of Moreland’s Celebrating Place grant, a program that “provides support for community groups to organise an event or celebration that connects people in new and interesting ways and enriches the social life of Moreland’s community”.

Happenstance will no doubt have something to suit all tastes. There will be experimental and interactive installations, dance, comedy, illustration, music and much more. What could be better than spending a Saturday lounging in the sun by a babbling brook and being treated to the work of some of Melbourne’s most progressive artists?

As a community-run, not-for-profit event, Happenstance are looking for volunteers! If you’d like to lend a hand on the day, visit their website
