Bean bags, beats and the big screen at Barefoot Cinema

Barefoot Cinema is making its way around the bay this summer with high-quality eats, beats and bean bags.

We all know that outdoor cinemas are a big thing in Melbourne during summer, but there are few settings as beautiful as Point Nepean in Portsea, Seawinds Gardens at Arthur’s Seat or Rippon Lea Estate in Elsternwick — home to the three venues for Barefoot’s summer program.

Featuring a range of family-friendly options, along with cult favourites and recent comedies, the program has something to satisfy all tastes in film.

What sets Barefoot cinema apart from the competition is not only the charming setting, but also the pre-show live music in the form of sweet acoustic tunes to set the mood while you enjoy the selection of delicious food and drink options from local Peninsula suppliers and take in the serenity.

You can bring your own food for a picnic, or indulge in the many delights from the Barefoot Bar or Martha’s Table; think Caramelised Pork Bahn Mi, Beetroot Salad and Chicken Tacos washed down with a cold beer, wine or cocktail.

Don’t forget to bring warm clothes and blankets, chairs, bean bags — anything you need to be comfortable and warm because it can get damn cold out there, even on these warm days we’ve been having.

If you’re feeling fancy, for an extra $20 Barefoot offers a VIP option which includes a super-comfy bean bag or reclining seat, a drink and popcorn, blanket hire and waited service during the movie. The super-comfy bean bags, also known as Airsacks, are highly recommended and can also be hired on their own.

While the Portsea program may be finished, you can still catch Barefoot Cinema before the end of the Arthurs Seat run; there’s some choice films including Rocky, ACDC Live in Concert and Mamma Mia showing over the long weekend. Alternatively, wait until February to see the likes of The Lion King, Hidden Figures, or Love Actually (on Valentines Day, actually) at Rippon Lea Estate in Elsternwick.

Get your tickets and arrive early secure your spot and enjoy the happy hour from 6:30p.m.7:30p.m. with bevs from Gage Road Brewing Co. and Stonier Wines, or indulge in a cocktail while you enjoy the music, the movie and the munchies on offer.

Somewhere Else video sings of summer

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
