The Big Design Market

Melbourne is obsessed with markets. Our fair city plays host to an ever-growing list of designer, craft and food markets, which multiply in a Gremlins-fed-after-midnight type frenzy leading up to Christmas. At the front of the pack is The Big Design Market, basically market heaven.

Since launching in 2012, year upon year it offers a colossal selection of unique and sustainable designer wares. With over 230 stands, it covers all things: clothing, jewellery, kids toys and homewares, not to mention mouth-watering food, local artist-run workshops, floral and art installations, kids’ play areas and even a balcony cocktail bar, all in the stunning World Heritage listed Royal Exhibition Building.

Held over three days from Friday 1 to Sunday, 3 December, The Big Design Market features the perfect mix of up-and-coming local talent alongside award-winning designers. Highlights for this year’s event include Indigenous artists from the Kimberley region in the Northern Territory and Simply Native Japan, representing a selection of highly skilled artisans from Japan. Also on the must-see list are And O Design’s exquisite hand-crafted jewellery, fun and functional ceramics by Takeawai, and Kester Black’s cruelty-free, vegan nail polishes and skincare products.

If the sheer number of shopping options seems a tad overwhelming, snap up one of the limited edition showbags containing products from some of Australia’s best-loved designers. Also up for grabs are $18 000 worth of prizes, including a snazzy Lekker bike. Gourmet food stands such All Day Donuts and Misschu are on hand to provide tasty refreshments.

As well as perusing the stalls you can sign up for creative workshops, such as ‘Beginners Guide to Indoor Gardening’ or block printing. Kids can also join in the fun with animal photobooths and artist-led activities such as making gum leaf necklaces or paper creatures.

If you’re looking to buy interesting, creative Christmas gifts in a vibrant atmosphere or want to people-watch, or you’re just after something to treat yourself, The Big Design Market is is for you. And you’ll get the warm and fuzzies from supporting local designers.

As with any good sale, it is best to arrive early to avoid the crowds. See you there!
