From St. Petersburg to Nizhny Novgorod, the Russian Resurrection Film Festival opens in Melbourne this week, dazzling you with fourteen of the very best of classic and contemporary Russian cinema. Screening at ACMI, the hand-picked films have been plucked from obscurity and dusted off in hopes of reaching a new generation of audiences. Milk Bar Mag is here to give you a run-down of the highlights of the festival to assist you with the Sputnik-sized task of selecting the right film.

Russian cinema has a lot to offer. Known for its thriving and diverse film culture, it consistently nails literary masterpieces, big-budget epics and gripping arthouse films. This year’s line-up is no exception.

Anna Karenina: Vronsky’s Story is the crowning jewel of the festival and is an innovative adaptation of Tolstoy’s famous narrative, diving deep into the dilemma of choosing between passion and duty. Attraction – Russia’s first alien invasion film – crosses new frontiers and is tipped to be a blockbuster, likened to a Russian Independence Day. For Game of Thrones fiends comes Viking, a Dark Age story of warriors wielding heavy swords, playing a game of murder, treachery and warfare.

The 1989 hit action–comedy Tango & Cash, starring Sylvester Stallone, Kurt Russell and Teri Hatcher, is also part of the program. The Russian connection? The film is directed by revered Russian director Andrei Konchalovsky. Runaway Train is the other highlight you cannot miss and is Konchalovsky’s existential adventure thriller based on a freight train ploughing through the icy wilderness of Alaska.

To celebrate, Milk Bar Mag are giving away 10 FREE double-passes to our lucky readers! All you need to do is email ross@milkbarmag.com with the subject line ‘Russian Film Festival ticket giveaway’ with your name and postal address. In the meantime, grab a Moscow Mule and we’ll contact you if you’re a winner.

Good luck!
