South Melbourne Market Sustainable September

There is a lot to be excited about come September, including warmer springtime weather and AFL finals (ie pre-grand final public holidays). There’s also South Melbourne Market’s month-long Sustainable September festival. Combining workshops, kids’ activities, an exhibition and market tours, the festival aims to inspire you to live more sustainably and reuse single-use items, rather than sending them straight to landfill.
Sign up to the workshops and you can learn the art of fermentation, how to cook an amazing meal with just scraps and leftovers or how to make beeswax wraps as an alternative to using plastic clingwrap. Discover some of the Market’s ethical traders and their wares, and also environmental innovations such as turning food waste into garden fertiliser, during The Sustainability Circuit tour. Or check out the Turning Trash to Treasure exhibition, which involves local artists creating something beautiful using only South Melbourne Market waste.
Kids can be creative and learn how to epicycle old denim jeans into new bags. The hands-on Turning Waste into Art craft workshop teaches them how to turn discarded packaging into toys or pieces of art. Or they can join Fairy Petunia during sustainability story time, which includes songs, activities, games and colouring in.
As well as all the fun and games, the Market hopes to highlight all that they are doing to reduce waste and reuse as many resources as possible. ‘Our Market is really closing the loop with its waste strategies and so it’s an exciting time,’ says City of Port Phillip Mayor Cr Bernadene Voss. ‘Sustainability is something we are very passionate about and we’re striving to reduce our environmental footprint and create a sustainable Market for the next generation.’

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
