Jesus Christ Superstar

Jesus Christ Superstar is a rock opera composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber with lyrics by Tim Rice. It debuted in 1971 and has been on stage in many variations over the years.  The musical is sung-through with no spoken dialogue. Directed by Gale Edwards, the story follows Jesus’ last week on earth in a modern respect.

The production company’s Jesus Christ Superstar was a show like no other, with a flawless cast of actors, singers and dancers. Each character immaculately came to life through standout performances by Rob Mills (Jesus), Zoy Frangos (Jedus) — in his debut with the production company — and the beautiful Alinta Chidzey (Mary Magdalene).

The amazing score by Andrew Lloyd Webber includes ‘Jesus Christ Superstar, Heaven On Their Minds’, ‘What’s the Buzz?’ and Mary Magdalene’s ‘Everything’s Alright’ and ‘I Don’t Know How to Love Him’. Each one of these catchy songs is sure to stay in your head long after the curtains close. Each song is paired with some astonishing dancing and stage presence.

The large stage is filled with scaffolding of different levels. The performers fill out the stage and move around the different levels with ease. The chorus of beautiful dancers and singers command the stage and at times, your eyes dot around to catch the next exciting thing.

At the back of two of the levels lays the orchestra. The show begins and ends with the orchestra and plays the most important part throughout the performance. The orchestra in itself is impeccable and eye-catching, even though it is tucked away on the stage.

The second act is filled with violence and special effects. These are portrayed with ease as the actors tell the story of Jesus’ death. Jam-packed with haze and smoke effects, the performance keeps you on the edge of your seat.

The production company’s Jesus Christ Superstar is a performance not to be missed. It is an entertaining and worthwhile show for everyone to enjoy. The impeccable talent from each performer, the director, orchestra and all background staff really did shine through.
