The Queen Victoria Winter Night Market is an annual highlight in every Melbournian’s calendar and it returns this year with a new theme: Fire and Lights. Milk Bar Mag was lucky enough to attend the launch of the 2017 Winter Night Market and sampled some of the market’s best food and drink stalls as well as fun, family friendly entertainment including magic, fire-eaters and puppeteers.

The Night Market showed off its illuminating new lighting installations and concepts, courtesy of creative studio John Fish, bathing the launch in a red neon glow and a haze of smoke, instantly setting the mood for a night of weird and wonderful acts. With thirty global food traders to send visitors on a culinary trek around the world, and fifty specialty and design stalls, you will never end a trip to the Night Market with empty stomachs or empty hands.

Highlights to look out for this year include: Bone Brth with their healthy and stomach warming beef and chicken broths; ReWine’s traditional Mulled wine made with local ingredients including vanilla beans and chilli for that extra spice; and That’s Amore, local Italian-style soft cheesemakers who put on a show with their hand made on the spot bocconcini balls as well as their infamous pastas, tossed and prepared in a giant parmesan wheel. For all those with a sweet tooth, a particular highlight is the Taiwan inspired Butterlake Pancakes, serving their own twist on the traditional Taiwanese sweet street food with a variety of flavours including Nutella and cookies and cream with M&M’s and pretzels. Definitely one to search for when the Market opens.

With live music and entertainment, a stunning show of lights, roaring open fires and the best food from around the world, you will never find a better or more rewarding reason to brave the cold this winter and visit one of this city’s greatest annual events.
