Their Finest

During the 1940s many women’s jobs were limited to such work as seamstresses or housekeeping. Throughout World War II women had to take up many male roles and job titles, as most able men were to fight on the frontline.

Their Finest is a stirring film complete with heartache, history and lots of laughs. The film is categorized as a British rom-com, although it would fall under many film categories. It is based in 1940s London during the Blitz of World War II.

The film is directed by Lone Scherfig and written by Gaby Chiappe. The story is based on the 2009 novel Their Finest Hour and a Half written by Lissa Evans.

In Their Finest, the British Ministry turns to propaganda films to boost morale for families at the home front. Our protagonist played by Gemma Arterton pushes the boundaries of her time as an outspoken woman, who starts screenwriting, ‘women’s slop’ for the film industry. Arterton’s character, Catrin Cole, is an inspirational character to women in the 1940s and women today.

This movie has the audience laughing and crying throughout. With many feminist undertones as well as romance and war themes, Their Finest is a revolutionary movie to see.

Somewhere Else video sings of summer

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
