National Pet Adoption Day

While Milk Bar Mag dabbles in the arts, fantastic events, and the incredible restaurant and bar scene in Melbourne, we are passionate about engaging with our community, and are privileged to talk about a wonderful cause that every pet-loving person should know about.

Sunday, 5 February is National Pet Adoption Day, where local pet rescue organisations will visit PETstock stores around the state to raise awareness of pet adoption. From 10.00am to 2.00pm, members of local communities are urged to visit their nearest store and interact (cuddle) rescue pets and learn about local pet rescue groups.

Each year, an estimated 230 000 healthy pets remain unclaimed in Australia’s pounds and shelters; and approximately, 100 000 pets were euthanised in pounds nationally last year.

Pet Rescue is a charity connecting animal welfare organisations with individuals and families looking to bring a pet into their home. ‘Our goal is to turn heartbreak into hope for orphaned pets’ said PetRescue co-founder Vickie Davy. ‘If just one if five pet seekers chose to adopt a pet instead of a shop, we could end pet homelessness Australia wide.’ She stated that most animals that found themselves homeless weren’t due to any issues with the pet – that it occurred as a result of change in circumstances for the owner.

PETStock CEO Shane Young reflected on National Pet Adoption Day as a fantastic opportunity for Australians to consider rescuing a pet.

‘Adopting a pet is a hugely rewarding decision that can ultimately save the life of an animal in need. All it takes is for pet seekers to make the ethical choice of adopting, rather than purchasing from a pet shop or breeder to find homes for our nation’s homeless pets.’ he said.

It’s time to think about our cute and cuddly friends who adore us unconditionally and think about those animals who are less fortunate.
