WINTER IS COMING…to Fed Square!

From Wednesday, 1 June to Sunday, 17 July, celebrate the change of season at the Winter in Fed Square event. The heart of Melbourne presents a light-tastic program of installations, exhibitions and performances.

The Light in Winter

Now in its 10th year, ‘The Light in Winter’ program brings together the Footscray Community Arts Centre, the Koorie Heritage Trust and a host of incredible artists, creating an innovative program of events curated by Arts Luminary Robyn Archer.

This launch event begins with the third Kirra Illuminating Glass Award (KIGA): the two most significant glass awards in Australia. Pieces must combine glassworks with light sources to create a glittering art form. These awe-inspiring spectacles will be exhibited at Kirra Galleries for the month of June.

Another must see? Three words: Sonic Light Bubble. All you need to know is that it’s giant, it’s inflatable and it contains motion responsive LED lights – what are you waiting for?!

Leempeeyt Weeyn’ Campfire

The campfire will be officially lit on Thursday 2 June and will burn continuously for the duration of this event. Celebrate the traditions of our land and culture with music and an Indigenous Welcome to Country.

River Rink in Fed Square

Nothing screams ‘winter’ more than ice skating. From the 18 June to 17 July, the Yarra River’s terrace will be transformed into an open-air rink creating a fun skating space for all ages.

Winter Solstice Celebrations

Embrace your inner pagan and herald in the shortest day of the year with a ritual signifying the rebirthing of the sun. Taking place on Saturday 18 June, the Winter Solstice celebration sparks new hope by marking the turning point towards increasing daylight.

The evening brings a plethora of performances and installations to light up the night:

  • Add your contribution to Tanja Beer’s,Refugium, by creating your own Japanese bonsai Kokedama at one of the free workshops. These will later be suspended from recycled wooden archways in the Square for all to see.
  • Keep an eye out for roaming performances, Peau Kula (Tsunami) by The Australian Performing Arts Network, a topical piece on global warming using puppets and an inflatable iceberg, and Fiery Ice Scream by the Luminous Lunas, a surreal and mystical celebration of feminine strength.
  • It’s friend against friend in this installation by Melbourne Media Lab. Light Duel is an interactive, pong-like game that allows two opponents to battle it out in a frenzy of neon light and electronic beeps. Game on!

Winter doesn’t have to be all chilly air and ominous grey skies that swallow up the day. Step into the light and check out Winter in Fed Square.
