Sloth Studios – “Not Just A Knob-Turner”

Milk Bar Mag recently sat down with cousins-slash-business-partners Sophia McMillan and Callum Edwards to talk about Sloth Studios and everything they offer!

Can you tell me about the studio and what it is you do?

CE: Sloth Studios is a recording studio that offers a lot more than just studio time. First and foremost, we’re affordable and practical. We know that up and coming musicians don’t have a lot of cash to splash on recording. We don’t compromise on quality and we help bands achieve the sound they’re looking for. We offer artists and bands everything from just studio time to full-blown production and artist management services. We also do a fair few live recordings in which we take all of our gear to a venue or event.

SM: We can also offer advice and direction for artists with regards to CD printing, artwork, video editing and photography and publicity. We put them into contact with the appropriate suppliers to assist with getting their music out.

When did you start the studio?

SM: We launched officially in mid-2014 with the release of ‘Jerry and the Jivetones’ EP, but Callum has had the studio set up since 2009 when he started to record his own material. The studio has evolved since then with lots of artists coming through to record and produce their music with us.

Why did you start Sloth?

CE: Sloth Studios started because I wanted to get my own material down, but now I prefer to produce. I do still like to perform, but as a musician, you need to have as many outlets as possible and I find these days I’m able to express my artistic vision through mixing, mastering and producing.

SM: I’ve always loved music, but I’m not much of a performer. So those who can’t do, manage. I’ve studied the different aspects of music management at university so I’m able to offer this expertise to our clients who need some assistance.

What kind of artists do you get through the studio?

CE: We get a lot of jazz. This is what I studied at university, so I have a lot of people in my network who are into jazz. That said, it really varies. One week there might be an improvised experimental band, the next a solo rapper, a folk band or even a 30-piece string band.

SM: We don’t discriminate, we’ll take any one and any style of music. We have a big variety of musicians and artists come through and we’re looking to take a collaborative approach and build relationships with artists when they come in to record.

What are you working on at the moment?

CE: An album for my folk band Davies West that has been in the works for a while. We keep getting better and better gear in the studio so we keep re-recording to make things sound better.

We recently recorded and produced an EP for emerging alternative rock band, Mild Manic, which is a really cool band and we’re really keen for people to hear them.

What should we expect to see from sloth studios in the future?

CE: A lot more recordings.

SM: We want to get our name out a bit more and work with some new artists to help them achieve the sound they want. We also want people to know that we have a full studio set up that is readily available to them.
