Pick & Spade

Whether you’re a university student, professional athlete or just a genuinely trendy person, Melbourne born street-wear label Pick & Spade will be right up your alley.

Founders Sam Di Natale and Ken Liew are childhood friends who met in primary school and share the belief that ‘Pick & Spade doesn’t just give you a timeless, tasty addition to your wardrobe— it deliver’s a piece of Melbourne culture.’

The two came up with the idea after Sam developed an interest in Ken’s Textile Design course, which he is currently studying at RMIT University in Melbourne.

“Ken was showing me some designs and logos for a client in one of his assignments and one happened to catch my attention— The Pick & Spade logo,” he said.

I said to Ken – “I reckon that would look good on a t-shirt! Why don’t we do give it a go?”

“So we started sampling, printing on basics and selling to close mates and the interest kept on growing – it was the birth of Pick & Spade and our signature ‘Classic’ Tee.”

In just under two years, Pick & Spade has gathered a following of over 5,000 on Instagram with the help of a few professional athletes reppin’ their gear. Melbourne Demons player Jay Kennedy-Harris, along with Luke McDonald and Majak Daw from North Melbourne, have all been snapped in their Pick & Spade apparel, giving attention to the brand to their combined 30,000+ followers.

With the brand continuing to flourish, I ask the boys—what’s next?

“For now we’re planning to expand our variety of products, making them more diverse whilst maintaining our original styling and design. At the moment we only dress the upper body but would consider the waist down, with a line of chinos and shorts at some stage,” says Sam.

“As we keep pushing the label to its limits – gaining experience along the way – in a few years from now, we aim to be either distributing to stores or in some form of retail.”

Pick & Spade is a Melbourne born street-wear label and as stated on their website ‘All lines of clothing are unique and each drop is limited to the season,’ so you better get in quick or you’ll have to sit and wait.

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
