Beach Burrito Company

Out of all of the Mexican restaurants with a skateable concrete pool smack-bang in the middle of the venue where they play rad ’80s tunes that I’ve ever been to, the new Beach Burrito Company in Fitzroy would probably have to be my favourite. This is possibly because it’s the only one I’ve been to, but mostly because it’s hard to argue with the idea of watching skaters try their hand at the Pistonhead skate bowl while sipping on frozen watermelon margaritas and chowing down on chimichangas and churros.

The Beach Burrito Company’s newest addition to the franchise is a world first, with its concrete pool that skaters will be given the opportunity to skate on an invitation basis, with skate jams scheduled to begin in early May.

The Beach Burrito Company first opened its doors in 2006 in Bondi, Sydney. Fast-forward to 2015 and The Beach Burrito Company had opened 11 restaurants across Australia, but had not yet made it to Melbourne. Knowing that Melbourne has no shortage of bars, nor burritos for that matter, Beach Burrito Company obviously knew their 12th venue’s debut in Fitzroy needed to be nothing short of 100% original. I think it’s safe to say that a double-story bar with an indoor concrete pool surrounded by pink and blue neon lights, completed by a life size Baywatch scene where you can stick your head through the faces to pretend you’re Pamela Anderson for a few moments is pretty damn original as far as burrito bars go.

The food served at Beach Burrito is fresh and fast and super tasty, with a menu boasting options such as lime chili garlic prawn tacos, pulled pork burritos and vegetarian options such as roasted vegetable and tofu burritos or tacos. The bar offers a delicious homemade sangria, frozen margaritas, a selection of tequilas and rums and a small wine list.  If beer is what you’re after, Beach Burrito’s specialty is Pistonhead Kustom Lager, which they sell by the bucket (literally!).

Beach Burrito have food and drink specials each day of the week, such as $10 burritos on Mondays and $3 Tacos on Tuesdays, as well as a $30 churros and sangria for two deal available anytime.  Whether you come for the food, the ‘80s nostalgia or to get a birds-eye view of people skating the pool, this unique and well-located venue in Fitzroy will no doubt deliver a very different dining experience, transforming what it means to have ‘dinner and a show’.

While Beach Burrito Fitzroy may be lacking in the beach department, I have no doubts you’ll find plenty of entertainment by the pool.
