Stephen K Amos’s Welcome To My World

Australians love to laugh at themselves and the idiosyncrasies of our humble country. We tend to find ourselves the butt of our own jokes andmake fun of all that others see as incredibly serious. We enjoy our comforts, and it is for this reason that every year, I gravitate to the Stephen K Amos show during the Melbourne Comedy Festival.

You’ll feel a funny, familiar connection with Amos as he trolls our Prime Minister, riles us about the storm that was the early 2000s banana drought, guffaws at the idea of a meat raffle and pulls out a line or two from Kath & Kim. He gets it down to the quintessential Australian spirit; we just don’t take ourselves that seriously and rarely feel the need to defend our quirks. We’d rather have a giggle at them.

Amos wants a big entrance and a big reaction, but his warmth & appreciation for the artistry of comedy is demonstrated in his ability to laugh at himself with ill-timed or lacklustre responses to his jokes. No comedian is immune, yet Amos has an uncanny ability to pick up from the place he last left and project his routine forward as if he intended to drop an off pun.
