We all love our creature comforts like TV, the internet, our couch or iPad. But have you actually ever been in love with one of these? As in, you want to marry it and have kids with it? I’m assuming the answer’s no, but you’d be surprised there are folks out there who would answer yes.

Commediane Nicolette Minster’s new one woman show Inanimately is playing as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival and discusses (i.e. makes fun of) these people, the proper term being objectum sexuals (yes, that’s a real term). She tells the tale of the love between her and her blue security blanket she’s had since childhood and how she couldn’t go on living without it. There’s one point she tries to recreate the triumphant dance in the movie Dirty Dancing to the hit ‘I’ve Had The Time Of My Life’ and when it comes to her being lifted into the air, she falls down as a blanket cannot lift up anything, let alone a person.

Minster goes on to talk about how and why actual people can love objects that they both own or are public landmarks (there’s a woman out there who wanted to get engaged to the Eiffel Tower!), and basically makes fun of it. She describes her feelings for a ladder and says how they’re taking their relationship “one step at a time”.

Minster’s a great performer and carries the show well all on her own, definitely worth checking out. So prepare yourself for some freaky stories that are hard to be object-ive about, and you’ll have some great laughs along the way from this late night show.

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
