Finucane & Smith’s Glory Box: Tenth Anniversary
Posted by Genevieve Wood
22. Aug, 2014
After 10 years of tantalising audiences with their mix of burlesque and cabaret that’s equal parts smarts and sass, Finucane & Smith’s 10th Anniversary season of Glory Box proves that great art never dates.
The shows ever evolving performance troupe are masters of their subversive stage. We see this in Emma J Hawkins broken doll routine, Holly Durant’s thoughtful and well-executed dance pieces right through to Roxie Stone’s rope climb. While at times the acts can be sinister and unsettling and at others uplifting and funny, things can appear rather uncategorised or unrelated, however, that’s precisely the point. The variety of entertainment is Glory Box’s true draw card and the reason its showcases are so captivating.
Through Finucane’s VB skoaling man in drag and Yumi Umiumare’s tongue-in-cheek portrayal of Japanese culture, we’re shown exactly how necessary this kind of performance art is. Glory Box is constantly blurring the lines between entertainment and statement, never afraid to push boundaries, question norms, or fall flat on their pearls in the process.
