Blindside: Live

Along with a seemingly premature chill, May has brought with it a trilogy of late night events, supported by the city of Melbourne.

The West Space, Blindside and Kings galleries are presenting a foray of nocturnal exhibitions. The artist-run initiative supports and showcases underrepresented experimental practices such as video, performance and sound.

While all live, the practices are dramatically varied – from an underwater immersive sound and light installation to a temporary sculpture garden, and conceptual band rocking out on their ‘instrulations’.

“It will be very interesting to see what kind of audiences come along, and how late people stay up!”, says Blindside director, Raymonda Rajkowski.

The gallery nights will run from 8pm-1am, but coffee and food will be served to fuel attendees’ drowsiness.

For early night goers, Blindside’s Showstoppers will run alongside their late night events – perhaps ironically also featuring Sydney artist, Frances Barrett “lightly sedated” and sleeping in the gallery.

Each of the four nights at Blindside will kick off with a screening of Box Set, a documented endurance piece from Sydney artists, Kate Blackmore and Barrett. The pair watched every episode of The Simpsons while fasting for eight days, in a live television studio, commentator included.

“We’re tapping in to things that are already happening, but doing it from the perspective of the practices we support – the more experimental and challenging approaches to art making.”, says Rajkowski.

Somewhere Else video sings of summer

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
