Dirty Playground: Six months of darkness (6MOD)
Posted by Veronica Fil
04. Dec, 2013
Bet you didn’t realise that underneath the clean, Scandinavian surfaces of Melbourne bar duNord was a 110sqm basement. Turns out they haven’t been brewing Rekorderlig cider down there either — rather, a team of artists have cleared out the crap left behind from business’ past, and transformed the space into a steamy hothouse of artistic creation.
The brief was ‘six months of darkness’ representing the Nordic calendar, which endures an annual period of prolonged nocturnal living. Of course, it also reflects the fact it’s being hosted in a dungeon.
Everything has come together with the help of subversive sweethearts Dirty Playground, who make it their mission to resurrect under-utilised, unrecognised, unconventional and ostracised spaces; matching artists to infrastructure and showcasing their talents in the most unexpected places.
For 6MOD, the Playground crew employed the skills of Marian Machismo, Ruskidd, Carlotta Phelan and a most intriguing outfit known as FKN-MAD — who, through a hybrid beast of art and computer code, have built their installation on the blocks of lighting, ‘three dimensional ambisonic sound’ and digital projection.
Running for one weekend only (Dec 6-8) embrace the dark side while you still can — the cider will still be there when you resurface.
6MOD opening party is tomorrow night and the exhibition runs from Dec 6 to 8, 11am-4pm
@ DuNord, 367 Little Bourke St, Melbourne. For more info visit dirtyplayground.co.
