Claypots Seafood & Wine

Claypots Seafood & Wine is an well worn, and well-loved seafood restaurant at the quiet end of St Kilda. Situated on Barkly Street, this restaurant is where the locals go for generous-sized portions, fresh seafood and an open bar with live music. Think chilli crabs, garlic tiger prawns, Cajun flatheads and grilled calamari. And don’t forget their signature claypots.

The dishes are priced according to size and are good for sharing with friends. The garlic tiger Pprawns ($10 each) make a great entrée. The prawns are succulent and juicy, and the garlic sauce makes for a great dip for the bread so don’t let any single drop go to waste. Be prepared to get messy when you order the chilli crabs ($60) – the crustaceans come stacked atop a bed of fluffy rice, and there are plenty of mussels to go around.

I was sold by the Cajun rock flathead ($45) – a whole baked fish which brings together a lively blend of spice and flavour. Less persuasive was the claypot dish, Orpheus ($15), which was a tad bland.

There are no reservations here, and the crowds rush in, so be sure to get here early before they open for dinner service.
