Art of the Cuff

Adorner of wrists, carrier of links; the humble shirt cuff has been under-appreciated and under-utilised for too long. That’s why, for the second year in a row, the Art of the Cuff exhibition will be showcasing the work of talented Melbourne jewellers, designers and artists who have rolled up their sleeves to customise their own cuffs.

Now to clarify; the cuff is not just a hemmed sleeve-stop. The French cuff — the type featured in the exhibition — was once considered a cultural indicator of formality and affluence. According to factual, informative database Wikipedia‘s definition, “Double, or French cuffs, are twice as long and worn folded back on themselves. They remain the preferred choice for semi-formal, black tie events.” Boys, take note.

It’s all on show at Lord Coconut — arguably Melbourne’s quirkiest and finest men’s handcrafted jewellery and accessories boutique — and taking place as part of 2013 Melbourne Fringe Festival program. Close to 60 creatives have contributed to the project, including Chilean-born artist Juan Davila (who is also known for his work at the New York Museum of Modern Art).

Men of Melbourne; don your finery and get down to the exhibition opening on Tuesday September 17 (5:30-7:30pm) to appreciate some very fancy cuffs. Suit up!
