The quick red fox jumps over the lazy dog

Meet Tara. She makes tables. Under the name Redfox and Wilcox. Mostly she makes it up as she goes along.

It all started a year or so ago when the table at her flat broke. After searching high and low for the exactly the right table she took it upon herself to make one.

Ignoring the concerned look in her flatmate’s eyes she headed to the hardware shop for supplies and turned her courtyard into a makeshift workshop. After one failed attempt (the trestle legs got in the way of the stools) she put the table up on eBay to make another. When that table sold for $800 you could say she had her light bulb moment.

A year and a half later and Tara’s working 12 hour days to fulfil the demand for her pieces. She works predominantly by private commission but is now also stocked in Blend Design on Smith Street. If you’d like to ‘try before you buy’ then you can check out her handiwork at Blue Corn Mexican restaurant in St Kilda.

Dealing in the Edwardian art of Parquetry, her recycled timber table surfaces strike just the right balance between simplicity and evident skill. Self-taught through trial and error and extensive reading, Tara hopes one day to do a carpentry course. Until then she’s happy to bound out of bed first thing in the morning and wait around the house a little too embarrassed to enter her studio before 7am.

Redfox and Wilcox is stocked at Blend Design and can be viewed by appointment at 7 Easey Street, Collingwood.
