Once A Tailor

Opening in August last year, Once A Tailor in Hawthorn is a quaint café serving breakfast, lunch and coffee seven days a week. Owners Tony Verga and John Bertuna named the café as such, after John’s father-in-law who was of course, once a tailor. It was this success that encouraged John and Tony to put aside their careers and pursue their dreams to operate their own café.

With its faux industrial looking roof, black walls, hanging globes and worn floorboards, Once A Tailor could be dismissed as just another metropolitan spot for brunch, however the European feel complete with cute courtyard and open fireplace ensure a cosy retreat for all.

The new autumn menu has upped the ante, boasting specials such as the quinoa salad with pomegranate, red radish, avocado, coriander and lemon dressing ($15.50), zucchini and Moreton bay bug risotto ($19.50), and the soft shell crab and prawn fettuccine with confit garlic and chili sauce ($19.50).

Other recommended repasts include the baked avocado & ricotta on sourdough with chilli ($12.50) and the home-made Cassateddi, which are oddly delicious – a Sicilian treat made of sweet pastry filled with ricotta and dusted with icing sugar ($2).

The wine list is considered and fairly priced, and there are some great options for vegetarians; meals can also be altered to suit the strict needs of vegans.

Opening soon on Friday and Saturday nights for dinner and drinks, Once A Tailor will charm even the most uptight diners. Escape the cold this winter with a delectable meal, coffee or drink in Hawthorn.
