New Gold Mountain sweetens up

Many an adventurous spirit has climbed New Gold Mountain’s summit since it first opened in 2006.

The staff’s nous behind the bar is well known and they have recently shown a sweeter side with a new cocktail-paired pastry menu. The small but surprisingly accommodating menu is well-priced ($6 – $7) and includes vegan and gluten-free options as well as a savoury muffin for the not so sweet-toothed. You can also opt to go all out with the dessert degustation and have a ½ serve of everything with two cocktails for $50.

Overall this was an intense, fun dining experience. Unfortunately they’d sold out of the spinach and feta muffin on the day I visited so I did find myself craving something savoury by the end. However the staff stepped in and they aptly picked cocktails to my tastes that helped to offset the sweetness of the pastries.

The pistachio and lemon syrup cake was a standout – rich and succulent with crunchy nuts and citrus flavours. It’s probably no coincidence that this was paired with my favourite cocktail of the evening ‘Carter Beats The Devil”. Like a spiced-up, smoky margarita souped up with wood-fired mescal and home-made chilli tincture. A damned fine drink to have on a blustery night out.

If you’re looking for a decadent late night dessert option then I’d recommend heading into NGM and finding a spot by the fire. See? There are some good things about winter.

Oh and they’re hosting a special event for World Cocktail Week on May 16. Dessert degustation, a couple of cocktails, aperitif and digestive for $50.
