Blak

This weekend sees the world premiere of Blak, a dance work which tells the story of a contempory clan and the collision of two worlds.

Produced by Artistic Director Stephen Page and dancer/choreographer Daniel Riley McKinley from Indigenous arts company Bangarra Dance Theatre, Blak is an enormous production featuring fourteen dance members. Among these is guest artist Hunter Page-Lochard, who appeared in the Sydney Theatre Company’s production Bloodland and more recently The Sapphires.

Through the urban perspectives of its artists, Blak combines edgy and physical dance, sensational set designs and costuming, light and sound, taking audiences on an evocative journey.

The soundscape is a collaborative work from music composer David Page and multi-ARIA award winning song writer, musician and producer Paul Mac.

“Being able to experiment with sonics, rhythms and arrangements out of the straightjacket of pop music has been completely liberating. I have never written for a contemporary dance company before, so I jumped at the chance to collaborate and co-write the music with David Page,” says Mac.

Blak is playing at The Arts Centre from May 3 – 11.  For tickets visit artscentremelbourne.com.au.

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
