FEAR OF MISSING OUT | FOMO THAI

In just under six months a tired and neglected double storey shell has become FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), a modern Thai restaurant  filled with noise, good food, chatter and friendly staff.

After running a previous business for five years, Merica Charungvat took on the mammoth task of renovating the heritage listed site. Once home to a pharmacy and more recently Fletcher Jones, the modern space still features the original copper and leadlight signage outside. Inside, chef Bongkot Kongyoo (who also happened to be Merica’s nanny) now shares the kitchen and her fiery recipes with Merica and the small FOMO team.

We began our night navigating through the signature dishes, Larb Moo Tod Sa Mun Prai – lightly fried minced pork balls ($15), Som Tam Tod – spicy green papaya salad ($16) and Tod Mun Pia Grai ($8) fragrant fish cakes, which also make for a great snack.

The real feast started when the Moo Krob Tod – roasted pork belly served with three specialty sauces ($38) and Gai Yang Ha Dao Char – grilled “Five Star” chicken ($15 half/$25 whole) hit the table. The finale of Cat Fish Red Curry ($24) should have been saved for our next visit, as the waist buttons were beginning to burst at our table of four.

Almost every Thai dish is conducive to beer drinking, and FOMO Singha on tap. Plus Happy Hour Monday – Thursday means you won’t have fear of missing out.
