Red Pepper

Red Pepper is a well-loved and much frequented Indian Restaurant at the top end of Bourke Street, with a constant flow of orders and aromas bursting from the bustling kitchen doors.

While the usual suspects are all available, there’s more than butter chicken and rogan josh here. North Indian dishes like Punjabi murgh masala ($13.90) is like a new lover – fiery and spontaneous, and you’ll find yourself daydreaming about the next chance meeting.

Another standout is the grilled gilati kebab- aromas of fresh ginger, green chili and spices coat the minced chicken ($12.90), while the garlic naan dispenses the need for cutlery: skewers are your friend with this dish.

With its Punjabi influences, there are a number of vegetarian options; the sarson da saag –green mustard leaves and spinach slow cooked for six hours. A pair of large, spiced potato samosas ($7) served with sour plum chutney match well with a Kingfisher ($6) or Dundee Pale Ale ($7). If beer isn’t your thing, Red Pepper has a generous BYO policy for wine.

The hum of people eating and cutlery scraping the plate is the tell-tale sign that Red Pepper has won the hearts, belly space, of many.
