Friendly fare at Friends of Mine

Picture this – you’re in one of Melbourne’s cutest cafes and everything from fresh flowers to the relaxed atmosphere and food is appealing. Doesn’t sound too bad, does it? Friends of Mine, located in Swan Street Richmond, is a not-so-quiet café serving brekkie, brunch and lunch – and it will charm the pants off you.

FOM is looked after by the Icke & Igby group, who also run Porgie & Mr Jones in Hawthorn, Snow Pony in Balwyn and Mazzitelli in Richmond.

The décor is set out into two sections which you can choose according to your personality: linen-draped tables with chandeliers on one side and the more casual wooden-tabled area with exposed brick walls on the other – with pops of bright yellow creating an atmosphere that feels like a hug from nana or the first beer in the afternoon sun.

With some gourmet deli goodies for sale and a menu that’s bigger than Texas; stand outs include the smashed avocado with thyme buttered mushrooms, feta and basil ($17.9), Mr. Jones golden folded eggs with herbs and goats cheese ($13.9) and the pork, chili and fennel sausage piadini with chips ($15.9).

The only glitch is the craziness on weekends, so be sure to get there early or go mid-week. Likewise the cash-only policy can be tricky, however forewarned is forearmed. So be a pal and take a friend of yours to Friends of Mine.
