Phatawhompus – a Where?House event for Melbourne Music Week

Phatawhompus will present cutting-edge, funkasaurus electronica to the Melbourne public on 22 November. It’s one of many events in Melbourne Music Week, and represents a flavour of music appropriate in these hi-tech days and times.

Many in Australia are familiar with artists like Californian Dave Tipper (who headlined the Rainbow Serpent Festival this year), New Zealand future funk beatsmiths Opiuo and Spoonbill, and Americans Eskmo and Beats Antique (who combine Middle Eastern and carnival aesthetics/performance (ie. bellydancing, fire twirling).

Phatawhompus is one part of Where?House, which is a lead-on from last year’s Kubik, which had acts like DJ Krush in an arrangement of glowing cubes of different colours. This year, Where?House have turned the Argus Building (on the corner of Elizabeth and Latrobe streets in the CBD) into a veritable wonderland of colour, light and sound, and making the warehouse dance experience accessible to a broader public. The Argus building is part of Melbourne’s older architectural landscape and its cavernous depths have been made over especially by the team of Where?House for the festivities.

Where?House isn’t the product of a new cultural movement, but a decades-old history in Melbourne of old-school jungle/DnB and techno parties from the early 90s. In this respect, Where?House are paying tribute to an unspoken history in Melbourne.

Where?House will be starting on the 16th of November, and going through until the 25th of November.
