Thomson Cafe Food Store

In case you didn’t know we kind of have a thing for milk bars. So when we found out that Thomson Café Food Store had recently opened up in an old milk bar, we just had to check it out.

Sitting down in Thomson Café Food Store it is hard to believe that this is the first café owner’s Corrine and Jordy have ever opened. The cosy space strikes a nice balance between comfort and edge, with a large wall mural painted by artist Amanda Hayes who is a good friend of Corrine giving the place a great burst of colour.

It not only offers a menu with range of refreshing choices but also sells delicious homemade goods for your purchasing pleasures, such as preserved lemons ($8), as well as organic milk and bread.

From homemade house crumpets ($11) to the ploughman’s lunch ($19), there’s enough variety on the menu to keep everyone happy – surprising when you see how small the kitchen is.

With a food philosophy that focuses on healthy, fresh and organic where possible the menu caters for all types of eaters. Gluten free bread is available (at no extra charge), with a special effort to ensure there is always one vegan, one gluten free and one dairy free cake option available.

When we went for a late lunch one afternoon we tried quesadilla ($19) stuffed with slow cooked pork, cheese and topped with avocado and sour cream. We also ordered rare beef salad ($19), with rice noodles, cucumber and spicy Thai dressing.  The salad was wonderfully fresh, with a decent hit of spice with out it being over powering.

Both dishes would be awesome hunger buster on a hot summers day. Maybe washed down with a double chocolate milkshake.

Somewhere Else video sings of summer

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
