Maritime art at Mission to Seafarers

Every six months or so I bang on about the Mission to Seafarers – that slightly out-of-place building down the Docklands end of Flinders Street.
Over the past 80 years the Mission has been picking up sailors from around the globe and offering shelter, counselling and more than a few cold beers. In my opinion the Mission is one of the most incredible buildings in Melbourne, with its whacky nautical theme, bar made from wine bottles and domed gallery.
If you haven’t been yet this week’s as good as any to go and check out not only the building but the entries in the ANL Maritime Art Prize and Exhibition, an annual prize for the best in maritime art. With over a third of all sales going back to the Mission, it’s also a great way to support a true Melbourne icon. And have a drink with some salty sea dogs.
