Canary

When I think of canaries, I think of chirpy songbirds that hang around with budgies in an aviary. I also think of Sex And The City (the show that popularised canary diamonds), paint swatches and Elton John.

The new Canary cafe in Prahran takes its name from a detail in its leadlight windows and runs with it, creating little bright touches around the small shop without going over the top.

Canary doesn’t just rely on its good looks – owner Eddie Cornelisson is a slashie – ex-social media specialist/personal trainer/newly-minted cafe owner who has opened a cafe that specialises in healthy food to eat in, take away or be delivered in the local area.

The premise is simple, ring the number listed on Canary’s website, order your choice of organic VegieHead salad ($8.50 each) and/or mini-rolls made with Dench bread ($4.50 each) with your coffee, tea or a juice and pick it up!

Canary’s little treats are handwrapped by store manager Kyle himself, with brownies and nut bars tied in cooking string. The selection changes, so check when you order.

While Canary’s current menu is compact, they hope to introduce lunchboxes and expand their range next month.

If you have time, a visit to their self-described “bangin’ premises” proves a cheery retreat, with Kyle always happy to chat, juggle a few coffee cups for your entertainment and serve up some coffee.

Yep, good things can come in small packages, and the little Canary is certainly packing a punch.

Somewhere Else video sings of summer

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
