The Twitter Pork Pie Challenge

Foodie tweets and meetups have around for a very long time, with countless articles and parodies dedicated to the subject.

Twitter hashtags have often been used to organise food meetups and events, including hugely popular ones such as #duckfest. The most recent culinary hashtag to pop up has been #porkoff, tracking a pork pie challenge between some of Melbourne’s premier chefs.

Spearheaded by Katrina Higham of Windsor Deli, #porkoff is a carry-on from #ecclesoff, which began as an exchange on how to bake Eccles cakes between Susan Farrell (Fringe Food Festival) and Ian Curley (Executive Chef at The European).

The conversation quickly became a friendly challenge between six chefs and ended up in a bake-off at Windsor Deli, with Michael James from Movida Bakery taking home top honours (and bragging rights).

This Friday it’s all happening again, and judging from the chatter and pictures of all the pork pies currently being baked and tested, this challenge will be even bigger than #ecclesoff.

And that’s not a porky pie.

#Porkoff is happening at Windsor Deli, 33 Hornby St Windsor this Friday 27 July from 5.30pm. If you’d like to attend tweet Katrina Higham at @katrinahigham
