For some people, eating a meal without meat is some kind of sacrilegious act, however Indian eatery Om Vegetarian has a few things going for it that may just convince meat-lovers otherwise.

With two locations in the CBD, Om Vegetarian aims to provide people with ‘wholesome, delicious and affordable food.’ And boy does it deliver.

Offering a set menu of two curries, pilao rice, butter naan and small serve of pickled vegetables all for only $6.50, it is a dirt cheap eat. If that isn’t cheap enough for you then get this, the good people at Om allow you five free refills. Which as my penny-pinching friend pointed out, works out to be $1.30 per serve. Not bad for decent feed.

With walls adorned in inspiring quotes and images of Indian holy man Param Sant Baljit Singh Ji, the modest set up resembles a communal dinning hall, where you get your own cutlery from the communal crockery holder and order at the counter.

When we visited, the curries of the day where chickpea and potato and cumin, which were both packed with flavour and spice without being too hot. The naan, fresh from the tandoor, was soft and so buttery that when a basket was handed around after we’d finished our meal we tucked in for more.

After your curries, if you can fit any more in, we recommend you try the two desserts on offer, Gulab Jamun and Ras Malai (both $2.00).

So whether you’re a struggling student, veggie lover or looking to branch out from your carnivore diet, Om Vegetarian will hit the spot.
