It’s not often you hear about old cinemas opening up, as the current tenancy predicament facing The Astor testifies. However it is with happy news we can announce (for a week at least) the return of Australia’s oldest cinema: The Northcote.

Established in 1912, the Northcote Theatre was the centre of entertainment in the area back in the day (sort of like its current neighbour, the Northcote Social). This week Blow Up Cinema is helping the venerable dame celebrate its 100 birthday not with a letter from Her Majesty but a week of film classics and bubbly.

These days the theatre, now known as the Regal Ballroom, and still used for events. You won’t find bean bags, half pipe of 3D inside (save that for Batman later this week), instead an ornate, pretty-damned majestic space that oozes cinematic charm.

The party runs until Thursday, so hop along and wish Melbourne’s oldest cinema Happy Birthday.

MONDAY: Donnie Darko
TUES: The Artist
WED: The Shining
THURS: Moulin Rouge

Northcote Theatre is a 216 High Street, Northcote.

It almost sounds like the premise of a reality TV show: pile a bunch of artists in a bus for seven days, send them across Mexico and see what happens.
