What's On
Australians And Modern Slavery
Posted by Jake Eldred
10. Jul, 2012
As part of The Wheeler Centre’s Lunchbox/Soapbox program, author and anti-slavery campaigner Roscoe Howell will deliver a free lunchtime seminar on the long hand of slavery in the 21st Century. The event promises to interrogate slavery as a fact of contemporary life for the 27 million people still enslaved today, and to explore recent definitional shifts that recognise phenomena such as organ trafficking and domestic service as modern incarnations of slavery.
Learn about the social and economic apparatuses supporting this institution, about what it means for a person to be owned by another, and about the vulnerable populations of men, women, and children being forced into bondage. If you can, be sure to come along to this important discussion of modern slavery, and learn how Australians can help dismantle this institution globally. No bookings necessary.
WHEN: Thursday 19 July, 12:45pm-1:15pm
WHERE: The Wheeler Centre, 176 Little Lonsdale Street, Melbourne
