Renowned dance troupe Bangarra return to Melbourne this month with the world premiere of Terrain. This new work, by celebrated Aboriginal choreographer Frances Rings and artistic director Stephen Page, is a powerful fusion of contemporary dance and traditional dreamtime storytelling.

Set in the Lake Eyre, Terrain is described as a hymn to country and a celebration of one of the few untouched natural waterways of the world.

Composer David Page, who wrote Terrain’s score, says it’s the family atmosphere and camaraderie that drives and inspires Bangarra each year to create inspiring and relevant work.

“The process usually happens organically. We start by going back out to the land and talking to local elders of the area. From there we let the language tell the story, and create the rest around it.”

Bangarra Dance Theatre continues to celebrate Indigenous traditions by interpreting them through the contemporary lenses of dance and music. See their latest this weekend.

Terrain runs from June 29 to July 7 at the Playhouse Theatre, Melbourne.
