Fighting Extinctions

One needs only to take a gander at the editorial output of the Herald Sun or the YouTube videos on highest rotation to know that people just bloody love animals. Seems the masses are chomping at the bit in anticipation of the latest tale of cute critters implicated in unfortunate yet humorous predicaments or engaged in activities normally relegated to humans … cats on treadmills, cats rapping, cats playing pianos, cats knitting jumpers…blah blah blah. This is all well and good, but while we are gawking at tabloid photographs of horses with their heads stuck in drainpipes and chortling at videos of frivolous feline antics, lesser-known animals are in genuinely serious predicaments. Like having their whole species perish and vanish from planet Earth. Forever.

In a step towards righting this wrong and restoring some balance to the focus of our animal obsessions, Jenny Gray, CEO of Zoos Victoria, will be taking to the Soapbox at the Wheeler Centre to talk about the role of zoos in fighting extinction, in preserving species at risk, and in engaging communities to take action to help animals. Imagine the difference we could collectively make if we all channeled our animal enthusiasms so admirably!

WHEN: Thursday 28 June, 12.45pm
WHERE: The Wheeler Centre, 176 Little Lonsdale Street, Melbourne
