National Reconciliation Week

27 May 2012 marks the 45th anniversary of the 1967 referendum, when over 90 per cent of Australian voters recorded the largest ever ‘Yes’ vote in a referendum to alter the Australian constitution. The vote enabled Aboriginal people to be counted in the national census and to be subject to Commonwealth laws

National Reconciliation Week is celebrated across Australia each year between 27 May and 3 June. The week provides the opportunity reflect on our shared histories, and also commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey: the successful 1967 referendum, and also the High Court Mabo decision, which ruled that the native title of Aboriginal People be recognised in common law.

Support Reconciliation Week at the free event celebrating the permanent flying of the Aboriginal flag on Melbourne Town Hall. View live music performances, browse the Koori Market stalls and enjoy a free Indigenous BBQ lunch.

WHEN: Sunday 27 May, 10.30am–2pm
WHERE: City Square, Corner Swanston and Collins Streets, Melbourne
