Redefining ‘Vintage’

Keeping things close to home, Michelle Hiatt, founder of With Fondest Love Aunt Maud & Maud Alice, is putting a new spin on vintage. The concept for both brands is to transform vintage fabric from their previous life in to modern, wearable garments. Founded in 2011, With Fondest Love Aunt Alice converts vintage fabric into clothing while Maud Alice utilizes similar material to create unique footwear.

The names for the two brands derive from Michelle Hiatt’s Great Aunt, Maud Alice Dainty. A woman of the world, she documented her travels and shopping adventures through photographs and daily journal entries that now fill Hiatt’s studio, The Hat Factory. Drawing inspiration from her journals, photographs and the signature from her letters sent home, the brands reflect the core of this unique brand.

The distinction of these brands is rooted in their handpicked vintage selection. All of the fabric is individually selected making each piece a one of a kind. Apart from the brand’s origin of inspiration, Michelle Hiatt also gathers ideas from the vintage fabric itself – the prints, textures and drapes. Now working on items such as tea towel espadrilles, front-ruffled tops, drape-scarf tees, tapestry based long boots and ankle boots, Michelle Hiatt and her design team plan on further developing the use of their favorite finds in to an even wider range of functional products.

Where to find it: Feast (Richmond), Blondies Boutiques (Melbourne), Eco D stores (Melbourne & Sydney) Oceans (Lorne), Emia (Sorrento), The Assembly Hall (Williamstown).
